I found our 1958 Higgins Magnum as a gray boat on a trailer next to an unoccupied house near Lake Winnebago in October 2003. After getting the owners name from the real estate agent, a deal was struck and we brought our boat home. I had previously restored a small outboard boat, so I had some idea what we were in for, but as most people who take on the task of restoring a boat, I misjudged the time needed significantly. My son Matthew, daughter Karen, and wife Janet helped out with many hours of time donated to the cause. Vamonos required a new bottom, deck, and transom. The framework was solid. We were able to find a rebuilt Ford Interceptor engine, the engine Higgins used in these boats, and launched Vamonos on the 4th of July 2005. It is a fast boat that we have timed at 47mph, so it suits its name well. We enjoy cruising and skiing with Vamonos on Lake Wisconsin and the Three Lakes Chain in Oneida County.

Higgins Industries was located in New Orleans and is most famous for its WWII landing craft and PT boats, and claimed to be the world’s largest boat builder at one time.
